Astolfo understands well the ideal of courtly love.

Love not strongly enough for you to do anything stupid. The lady is far beyond your reach, meant for one other than you. That's the way it's supposed to be.
If the balance tips too far either way, the courtly love of the knight falls apart. Astolfo has seen it happen to younger, more foolish knights.
(He's made his foolish mistakes as well, but at least less often than some. Now more than ever, he must emulate the perfect knight as best as he can.)
