Three days. It had been three days since Saori Nakagawa suddenly disappered from Prospero. Kaiji Ito had woken up to an empty bed. Her phone number was gone from the contact list and no one knew where she went. Her dog Sirius sat in front of her door, whining and waiting for his master to come home. When Kaiji went to her hotel room, everything inside that wasn’t bolted down was gone.
“Kaiji,” a familiar voice called out for the man standing outside of the hotel. He turned around, and his face turned white as if he saw a ghost.
She looked like Saori but something wasn’t right about her. The clothes were different from that green dress and white corset he was familiar in seeing. She wore what looked like a black halter version of a kimono top with a hakama. Her hands and forearms had white cloth wrapped around them like a boxer’s. The only color there was the green sash tied around her torso.
“Who the hell are you and why do you look like Saori?” Could it be another shadow version of her?
It was her eyes that were the dead giveaway that she wasn’t the Saori he knew and loved. There was something old and weary about them. And yet they weren’t yellow like the shadow version he encountered before.
“I am Saori Nakagawa, Kaiji, just from a later point in my life. Sorry, time travel gets a little confusing,” she explained. “I’m here to take you back home.”
He opened his mouth but no words came out. No, he didn’t want to go back there. Home meant struggling to break free from the Teiai group and the yakuza. His voice was grave and he didn’t look at her. “Why?”
Saori reached up to cup his face with a hand. “It’s because you’re needed back home. Did you forget that you’re not only fighting to get your freedom back but for Miyoshi and the others? Besides, look around you, most of the people who were brought here were already sent back. You knew it was only a matter of time before it was your turn.”
“What about you though? You said you were dead in your homeworld and yet you were sent home,” his voice trailed off as thought sparked into his mind. “H-hey, Saori, why don’t you come along with me? We can still be together, right?”
She looked down at the ground and shook her head sadly. “Why not?”
“Kaiji, for me, it’s been one hundred years since I was taken from Prospero,” she sighed. “Yes, I said I died back home but that was only my physical body. I ended up being taken up by the son of Inari, one of the Shinto gods, and joined them in fighting against supernatural creatures that wish to consume souls. Believe me Kaiji, I tried every day to find my way back but not even the Inari could help me out. Somehow I ended up being summoned here with a note saying I’ve been given permission to send you back but I cannot follow you back to your world.”
Kaiji, shocked, sat down on the stairs leading to the hotel. “Shit, why did it have to happen like this? I’m not going back, not without you, Saori!”
She sat down on the stairs with him and pressed her forehead against his. Her whole body shook as she tried to hold back from crying. “I knew you’d say that and I do want to go with you but I cannot. Prospero wasn’t meant to be permanent, Kaiji. We all had to go back home at one point or another. We’re all needed back in our home worlds.“ He pulled her in close, not even trying to choke back his tears. “I came back because I wanted to say goodbye since I couldn’t last time.”
Saori kissed his forehead and then his lips. “Please have it in your heart to forgive me. Remember that I love you and I’ll be watching over you.” A pale blue light glowed beneath them but they were occupied in the moment to notice. A minute and a flash later, the two were gone.
Kaiji woke up on a park bench with a jolt. He looked around at his surroundings. This definitely wasn’t Prospero. “Shit...I’m really back home.” Then he noticed a piece of paper folded in half but when he picked it up, something slid out. Out of reflex, he caught the item and was shocked to see it was an all too familiar necklace in his palm. He looked back at the paper and saw there was something written.
“Kaiji, I’m giving you this as a memento of our time together in Prospero. I know you’ll take good care of it. .
Love, Saori.”
He didn’t remember how long he sat there, but by the time he couldn’t cry anymore, it was already sunset.
