Every time Madoka smiles at Sanaki, the younger girl gets a little more flustered. It's hard to see, but she pauses in her speech where she doesn't need to and looks away when there's nothing to look at.
Eventually, she gets so curious that she chances being rude. "Um, Sanaki, I was wondering if there was something about... when we talk to each other that was making you uncomfortable?"
"You are not precisely making me uncomfortable." Sanaki sighs. "In my home, I am surrounded by people who are putting on falsehoods. The senators have no real love for me, but try to keep me pleased so that I'll go along with their wishes. The people who come to appeal to me are motivated by what they want, and toady just as much even if they do genuinely like me. I rarely leave the cathedral to speak to the people otherwise. I am unused to someone who is smiling at me because they are happy."
"Oh... that's sad..." Madoka takes Sanaki's hands in hers suddenly and notices her turn pink. "I promise to be totally genuine with you even if no one else is. Is that okay?"
After a moment, Sanaki nods. "...Thank you. It means a great deal to me."
